Traditionally thought to be derived from etymology 3, but its etymology is disputed. Norman (1984) argues for a derivation from 戍 (OC *hljos, “to garrison the frontier”), while Zhengzhang (2014) proposes that it is from 處 (OC *kʰljas, “residence”).
