Spanish
Etymology
Cognate to Catalan tanda and Galician tanda, of unknown origin. Perhaps from a Latin tanta (literally “that much”) or nominalization of Latin tandem (“(of time) at length, at last”), with contamination from either. Normally suggested to be from an instance noun Arabic ضَمْدَة (ḍamda, “bandage”) from the root ض م د (ḍ-m-d) being metaphorically used, however, apart from this semantic development being dubious, not only the consonants do not match but this Arabic noun is of utmost rarity.
