From earlier Old Catalan guadanyar~guasanyar~guaanyar, from Vulgar Latin *wadaniāre a borrowing from Germanic. Cognate with Occitan ganhar (medieval gazanhar, gaaigniar), French gagner, Italian guadagnare; cf. also Spanish ganar.
