Background and Identification

Whirlpool is a brand name owned by the Whirlpool Corporation, a United States-based maker of home appliances. The company was founded in 1911 as the Upton Machine Company. In 1929, they merged with the Nineteen Hundred Washer Company and changed their name to the Whirlpool Corporation in 1950. Whirlpool is well-known for its social and environmental activism policies and practices. Whirlpool sells a variety of home appliances, largely focused on kitchen and cleaning applications. This includes ovens, refrigerators, microwaves, washing and drying machines, and more.

One of the most significant innovations in Whirlpool's history was the that of the first electric clothes dryer in 1948. This dryer was responsible for changing the way consumers, who previously had to rely on clotheslines or clothes racks to dry their clothes, did laundry. Whirlpool's dryer featured a vented design that expelled hot, moist air, making it considerably more efficient than previous models. They have since continued to include new features to their dryer models such as automatic temperature controls, multiple drying cycles, digital controls, and moisture sensors, which could detect when clothes were dry and automatically shut off the dryer to prevent over-drying.
