Possibly from Middle Chinese 剎 (MC tsrhaet), abbreviation of 剎多羅 (MC tsrhaet ta la), ultimately borrowed from Sanskrit क्षेत्र (kṣetra). Cognate with Japanese 寺 (tera, “Buddhist temple”), which has been thought to have been a borrowing from an ancient Koreanic language. (Can this(+) etymology be sourced?)
