From Proto-Tai *ʔɤtᴰ (to go hungry). Cognate with Northern Thai ᩋᩫ᩠ᨯ, Lao ອົດ (ʼot), Shan ဢိုပ်း (ʼúep), Ahom 𑜒𑜢𑜤𑜆𑜫 (ʼüp). Compare Khmer អត់ (ʼɑt).
