I decided to make short break from tedious work and went out to take a breath of fresh air. The sun was shining and birds were singing, which made me feel so calm and carefree that I even decided to visit a caf nearby for a nice cup of coffee.
Once I opened the door, a gentle murmur of human voices came into my ears. The place was spacious and light and at the same time full of people. Melodious piano music could be heard around the hall and a delicate smell of coffee mixed with odour of cigarettes wafted in the air. I found a seat near the window and made myself comfortable, waiting for my cup of coffee and a cake.
After a few minutes the waiter appeared with a big silver tray. He put the coffee and the apple-pie in front of me. I took a cup and smelled the aroma of evaporating strong black liquid, made out of original coffee beans imported from Brazil. I really enjoyed that particular moment of a day when I could drown my sorrows in successive sips of the early-morning cup of the drink, which many people despised due to its reputed harmfulness to one’s health.
A small square slice of a cake interlaid with sweet apples was lying on a small white china plate. I took a small bite and felt a sweet flavour melting in my mouth, which seemed to harmonize with the taste of freshly-brewed coffee. Although the scent of cigarettes was hanging in the air like a fog, I managed to be persistent and not to light a cigarette after two weeks’ drying-out.
The subtle sounds of classical tune played live by a young boy, the fragrance of coffee and tobacco and the vibrant views of the city behind the window made me so relaxed that I didn’t want to leave the place. However, the time was flying unrelentingly and I had to come back to my office.
