Attested since the 13th century. Probably from Suevic *rippia,[1] or else from a late Visigothic cognate of it,[2] from Proto-Germanic *ribją (“rib, reef”), from Proto-Indo-European *h₁rebʰ- (“arch, ceiling, cover”).
