Borrowed from Japanese ラーメン (rāmen), from Mandarin 拉麵/拉面 (lāmiàn, “pulled noodles”). Doublet of laghman, lamian, and ramyeon.

Etymology 1
From Middle Dutch ramen (“to aim, to strive for, to guess”), possibly from Old Dutch *rāmon, from Proto-Germanic *rēmijaną, *rēmāną, perhaps ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *h₃reyH- (“to set in motion, move about”), as in English roam.
