From Proto-Indo-European *ḱwes- (“to puff, sigh”). Cognate with English quarrel, wheeze, Icelandic hvæsa and Sanskrit श्वास (śvāsa), Pashto ساه (sāh, “breath, blow, puff, soul, spirit, essence”), Baluchi ساہ (sáh, “breath, blow, essence”).
