Talysh

Pronoun

  1. ergative of az: I
    əvım vinde
    I saw him

Turkish

Etymology

Inherited from Proto-Turkic *-mi.

Pronunciation

  • IPA(key): (sense 1) /mɯ/, (sense 2) /ˈmɯ/

Particle

  1. Used to form interrogatives.
Arabanı sattın ?Did you sell your car?
    Aptal mısın?Are you stupid?
Dondurma alacak mıyız?Are we going to buy ice cream?
  2. (colloquial) once, as soon as
Güven kağıt gibidir; bir kere buruştu mu, hırpalandı bir daha eskisi gibi olmayacaktır.
Trust is like paper; once it's wrinkled, once it's battered it'll never be like it once was.

Usage notes

  • Personal suffixes are added to the interrogative particles, as well as the past tense suffixes.
  • This form is used when the last vowel of the previous word is "a" or "ı". Other forms used with different vowels are: mu?, mi? and ?

Inflection

Slightly irregular conjugation despite mi being a particle. Aorist are the same with future (but imperfective -yor > muyum). Past, inferential, and conditional tenses instead of having normal endings (*mıdım, *mısam, ..), this particle instead has -y-. This irregularity arose from the compounding with *imek, of which has past idi, conditional ise, and inferential imiş, later suiting to the Turkish vowel harmony.

This particle follows vowel harmony from the previous word (see below), thus sever miyim, not *sever mıyım.
