From Middle Dutch hêten, from Old Dutch hētan, originally from the passive voice of Proto-West Germanic *haitan, from Proto-Germanic *haitaną.

  • In a lot of dialects and colloquially the verb noemen (call, give a name) is used instead of heten. This is generally considered incorrect[1] and is not usually tolerated in written Dutch.
