From Flaps (“lout, oaf, churl”) + -ig, ultimately from flapp, imitative of the sound of clapping. Further meanings developed in the German Low German [Term?] and Central German dialects and vernaculars. Compare German Flappe (“twisted mouth, hanging bottom lip”).
