From Old Galician-Portuguese amẽaçar, a variant of mẽaçar, either from mẽaça (“threat”) + -ar, or from a hypothetical Vulgar Latin *admināciāre (“to threaten”) < *mināciāre (“threaten”), from minācia (“threat”), from Latin mināx, mināciae. Compare Portuguese ameaçar, Spanish amenazar.
