From Old Galician-Portuguese amẽaçar, a variant of mẽaçar, either from mẽaça (threat) + -ar, or from a hypothetical Vulgar Latin *admināciāre (to threaten) < *mināciāre (threaten), from minācia (threat), from Latin mināx, mināciae. Compare Portuguese ameaçar, Spanish amenazar.
