Etymology
Lītuānī (“Lithuanians”) + -ia, from Proto-Slavic *litъva, ultimately from Baltic. First known attestation of the root in Latin is in 1009 as Lītua. The h-variants may be influenced by German, where the name formerly appeared also as Lithauen and Litthauen, with the h marking the length of the previous vowel.
