Phono-semantic compound (形聲形声, OC *dɯːŋ, *duːŋ) : semantic (sickness) + phonetic (OC *tuːŋ).

Etymology 1

simp. and trad.

Wang (1982) suggests that it is cognate with (OC *l̥ʰoːŋs, “painful”).

Coblin (1986) derives it from Proto-Sino-Tibetan *gdəngw (pain; hurt), comparing it to Tibetan གདུང་བ (gdung ba, to feel pain) and keeping it separate from the word family with . Schuessler (2007) notes that this is a post-classical word.
