Old Anatolian Turkish
Etymology
From an extinct Central Asiatic substrate. Cognate to Karakhanid [script needed] (qulabuz), Chagatai قولاوز (qolavuz, qolauz), Bulgar [script needed] (qolovur), Kipchak قلاغوز (kulağuz), Yakut халабыс (qalabıs), and the Turkic loanwords Byzantine Greek κολόβρος (kolóbros) / χουλοῦβρος (khouloûbros, “a Bolghar title”), Persian قلاوز (qolâvoz), قلاووز (qolâvuz), Hungarian kalauz.
The similarity to Latin clāvus (“nail; (metonymically) helm”) and to Classical Syriac ܩܦܠܘܛܐ (qap̄lūṭā, qap̄lōṭā, “leek; (figuratively) nail”), instead from Ancient Greek πράσον κεφαλωτόν (práson kephalōtón, literally “headed leek”), is coincidental.
