From Proto-Turkic *sat-ïg-čï (seller), from Proto-Turkic *sat- (to sell).

Cognate with Kazakh сатушы (satuşy, seller), Southern Altai садучы (sadučï, seller), Turkish satıcı (seller), Dolgan атыыһыт (merchant), Chuvash сутуҫӑ (sut̬uś̬ă, salesman), etc.

Synchronously, һатыу (hatıw, to sell) + -сы (-sı, affix forming an agent noun).
