φαιός
Ancient Greek
Etymology
The word has been compared with Latvian gaišs (“light, bright”) and reconstructed as Proto-Indo-European *gʷʰaiso- (“bright, shining”). Other reconstructions which have been proposed are *φαιϝός (*phaiwós) and *φαισϝός (*phaiswós). In short, the etymology is still unknown.
