My favourite film

I want to tell you something about one of my favourite films. It is called “Siódma Pieczęć” and was directed by Ingmar Bergman. It was made in 1957 so it’s preety old but it talks about the motifs still present in our life. About the Death.
The seventh seal is in the Bible one of the symbols of the Apocalypse – the end of everything. As you can see the religion plays in that film a major role. The plot of the film is set in the medieval times (something about XI century), during the crusades.
At the beginning of this film we see a knight playing chess with a black – hooded person. When this person turns to the camera we see it’s the Death. He has sticking out cheek – bones and pale forehead. But he also has eyes, that makes him more human than we think he is. Sitting somewhere on the Swedish or Norwegian rocky sea – shore, the Death and knight strike a deal. If the knight wins the game – his life will last forever. If he loses – the Death will take him immediately. They will be playing till the time, when somebody wins the game.
During the whole film we see people going on crusades, because the knight is a religious one, who converts the so – called unfaithful ones to Christianity. There are some beautiful scenes, in which the Death speaks to people and tells them, nobody can cheat on him and stay alive forever. But he still plays with the knight. The more often he does it, the more we think about the Scandinavian knight winning the game. It is potentially possible, because he even wins the first part of the game.
In this film the Death is very important, because he takes away people from this world. And in his behavior there is no rule. Nobody knows, when he’ll be taken. There are not only old people, but also babies going with the Death during the action of the film.
Watching this film we really hope the knight wins the game and the Death loses and goes away. But in the end the Scandinavian men loses the game and the Death takes not only the knight but also his family with him. The message of the film is rather pessimistic one. Like the Death said: “Nobody can cheat on her”.
