In life we have to make decisions, when we make them we often must sacrifice something. It’s important, because progress is not possible without sacrifices.
One very good example of characters that sacrifice something to achieve its goal to make a progress is Romeo and Juliet from Shakespeare’s play. They were in love and one thing that they desired the most was to be together. But their families which hated each other were an obstacle. They had to meet stealthily and finally married secretly without witnesses. Then Romeo killed Juliet’s cousin Tybalt, so he was banished from Verona. Finally last greatest sacrifice that lovers made- Romeo drinks a poison, and Juliet takes a dagger and stabs herself. They sacrificed their lives for their love and to be together, even after death.
A second example of character who sacrificed something to make a progress is John Proctor from the Crucible. He really wanted to free his wife and his friends, and prove that they are not the witches. He went to the court and he confessed to adultery, which destroyed his reputation. He also must confess to things that he never did. He was jailed and sentenced to death. He left his wife and his two sons. The same as Romeo and Juliet he sacrificed a lot of things to make a progress, and finally he sacrificed the most valuable thing, his life.
My last example is Martin Luther King, a black man who sacrificed his life for fight for the equality for African Americans. He made a lot of speeches and wrote editorials, which was dangerous for him and his family, because there were people who had different opinions, and who wanted to stop him. Even once someone bombed his house. It was not easy to go against everyone he had to sacrifice his reputation. He also made marches, which often end as a boycott what was very perilous. Finally he was assassinated at the age of 39.
From the examples above we may conclude that progress is not possible without sacrifices. We always have to sacrifice something, and unfortunately usually it is something valuable and important for us. Romeo and Juliet sacrificed everything, including their lives for love. John Proctor also sacrificed his life to free his wife and his friends. Also Martin Luther King devoted his life for fight for the equality. I would say that not only progress is impossible without sacrifice, but paradoxically life is not possible without sacrifice.
