Computer games are one of the parts of show business today. Heroes of the most famous games are treated like film stars. Kids buy their posters and these computer made heroes are interviewed like real people.
The first serious discussion about computer games influence on children was started after publishing game called “Doom”. This full of blood and violence game caused age restrictions on games, just like it is with the movies. Psychologist think that limit between reality and imagination is very smooth and might affect children’s behavior. Kids with guns sounds impossible, but after events in Littleton and Erfurt it has a new meaning. Obviously we can not hold computer games editors responsible for every youth manifestation of violence. The age restrictions of computer games are not obeyed. No matter what kind of game kids want to buy, they don’t need any ID because they won’t be asked for it.
On the other side there are some educational computer games that develop intelligence and imagination. The strategic games learn tactical planning. Adventure games extend imagination. There are lot of games for younger children that teach mathematic or foreign languages. Three dimensional games develop kid’s mind’s eye. In recent years computer games are used in school to aid regular education by “To teach and to play” motto.
Computer games are relatively new kind of entertainment so influence of it on psyche should be checked in couple years. About sixty years ago television was said by some people to be evil of the whole world and the others believed it would help with education and science. No one was right. In most cases television is watched for soap operas. I think that games won’t be something very good or very bad. It’s somewhere in the middle.
Beside all of that kids have free choice and if they want to play violence games nothing would interfere them with it.
