Inherited from Proto-Balto-Slavic *taptéi, cognate with Lithuanian tàpti.[1] The present stem tòpu comes from an earlier Proto-Baltic *tampuoˀ (whence also Lithuanian tampù). Further origin is disputed: see Balto-Slavic etymology.
