From Vulgar Latin *reiectare, from Latin rēiectus (“thrown back; rejected”), perfect passive participle of rēiciō (“I throw back; I repel; I reject”), from re- (“re-”) + iaciō (“I throw; I hurl”). Cognate with Portuguese rejeitar.
