Etymology 1

From Proto-Albanian *məi̯es with secondary nasalization, from the comparative of Proto-Indo-European *méǵh₂s (big). Cognate with Gothic 𐌼𐌰𐌹𐍃 (mais, more), Oscan mais (more).[1] Related to madh (big).

From Proto-Indo-European *h₁me (me). Cognate with Latin , Ancient Greek με (me).[1]

Etymology 3

From Proto-Albanian *ambi, from Proto-Indo-European *h₂m̥bʰi. Cognate with Ancient Greek ἀμφί (amphí).[1] The simplification of /mb/ to /m/ is expected in Gheg but not in the standard language, hence the alternative form mbë.
