- From Proto-Indo-European *h₂us-los (compare Sanskrit उस्र (usrá, “reddish, ruddy; bright; matutinal”)), from *h₂ews- (“to dawn”) (compare English Easter, Latin aurōra, Lithuanian aušrà).[2]
