From Proto-Balto-Slavic *auštrā́ˀ (“dawn, morning”), from Proto-Indo-European *h₂ews-ro-, from *h₂ews-. Cognate to Latvian àustra, aũstra (“dawn light”), Proto-Slavic *utro (“morning”), Proto-Germanic *Austrǭ (“Easter, springtime”), Latin aurora (“dawn”).
