guadañar

Spanish

Etymology

From guadaña, or from Old Spanish guadanyar, from Vulgar Latin *wadaniāre (pursue, win; scythe, mow, graze), from Frankish *waiþanōn. The semantics shifted to "win/gain/earn" in most of the other Romance languages.

Compare Portuguese ganhar, Catalan guanyar, French gagner, Italian guadagnare. See also Spanish ganar (gain, win, earn), from a different root influenced by the etymon of this word.
