From Middle High German genüegen, from Old High German ginuogen, from Proto-West Germanic *ganōgijan, from Proto-Germanic *ganōgijaną, from the adjective Proto-Germanic *ganōgaz (enough, sufficient), ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *h₂eh₂nóḱe (he has reached, attained), perfective of *h₂neḱ- (to reach). Cognate with Dutch genoegen, Icelandic nægja and Norwegian Nynorsk nøye.
