Proto-Slavic

Etymology

Of undetermined origin. Speculated to be of expressive origin, derived from *sъskati (to hiss) + *-ьlъ, or less likely to descend from *sъsati (to suck) + *-ьlъ. Another hypothesis, based on the dialectal variants *sujękъ m / *sujęca f, proposes an origin from *sovati (to shove, to ditch into) (related to Proto-Slavic *sudlica (spear)). This hypothesis, however, demands *sъsьlъ to reflect a reduplicated form of the root Proto-Balto-Slavic *śauˀ-.

Possibly akin to Latvian susuris (fat dormouse).

Noun

*sъ́sьlъ m

  1. ground squirrel (Spermophilus citellus)
    Synonyms: *věverica, *bělъka
  2. anemone (South Slavic)

Alternative forms

  • *sysьlъ
  • *susьlъ
  • *sujękъ m, *sujęca f (possibly)

Derived terms

  • *susьlikъ
