Inherited from Old East Slavic сусолу (susolu), that from Proto-Slavic *sysьlъ, probably onomatopoeic of its calls; related to Bulgarian съскам (sǎskam, I hiss) and Old Church Slavonic свистати (svistati, to whistle).
