Related to Japanese 熊 (kuma, “bear”) and Old Korean *고마〮 (*kwòmá, “bear”) > Middle Korean 곰〯 (kwǒm). Beyond Korean and Japanese, compare also Old Chinese 熊 (OC *ɢʷlɯm).
