Etymology 1
From Proto-Sino-Tibetan *boj (Benedict, 1972; Schuessler, 2007).
Cognate with Burmese ဗွေ (bwe, “whorl; cowlick”), Jingpho [script needed] (boi, “to have a cowlick”); Tibetan བལ། (bal, “wool”) is related either to this or 綿 (OC -) ~ 棉 (OC *men, “cotton”).
