In the current form, an ideogrammic compound (會意/会意) and phono-semantic compound (形聲/形声, OC *ŋan, *ŋranʔ, *ŋrans) : phonetic 鬳 (OC *ŋans, “cooking vessel”) + semantic 瓦 (“earthenware”).
