From Old Khmer ក្រេង (kreṅa), ក្រេង៑ (kreṅ, “to be fearful, afraid, frightened; to be timid, timorous; etc”). Compare Old Chinese 驚 (OC *kreŋ). Cognate with Modern Khmer ក្រែង (kraeng), Lao ເກງ (kēng).
