Inherited from Sauraseni Prakrit 𑀧𑀟𑀤𑀺 (paḍadi), from Sanskrit पतति (pátati, to fly, fall). Compare Punjabi ਪੈਣਾ (paiṇā), Nepali पर्नु (parnu), Gujarati પડવું (paḍvũ), Bengali পড়া (poṛa), Assamese পৰা (pora).
