Borrowed from Classical Persian جایگاه (jāygāh), جاگه (jāgah), from جا (jā), جای (jāy, “place”) + گاه (-gāh, location suffix). Compare Gujarati જગ્યા (jagyā), Hindi जगह (jagah), Punjabi ਜਗ੍ਹਾ (jaghā) / جگہ (jgh), Bengali জায়গা (jaẏga), Assamese জেগা (zega), Sylheti ꠎꠦꠉꠣ (zega).
