जगह
Hindi
Etymology
Borrowed from Classical Persian جایگاه (jāygāh), جاگه (jāgah), from جا (jā), جای (jāy, “place”) + گاه (-gāh, “location suffix”). Cognate with Assamese জেগা (zega), Bengali জায়গা (jaẏga), Gujarati જગ્યા (jagyā), Marathi जागा (jāgā), Nepali जग्गा (jaggā), Old Deccani جاگاہ (jāgāh), Odia ଜାଗା (jaga), Punjabi ਜਗ੍ਹਾ (jaghā).
The shortening of the vowels may be due to influence from जगत् (jagat, “world”).[1]
