Inherited from Sauraseni Prakrit 𑀲𑁄𑀘𑁆𑀘𑀤𑀺 (soccadi, to purify), from Sanskrit शोच्यते (śocyate, to be purified; to be made to feel pain), from the root शुच् (śuc). Cognate with Punjabi سوچنا / ਸੋਚਣਾ (socṇā), Sindhi سوچڻ / सोचणु (socaṇu), Nepali सोच्नु (socnu), Assamese সুচা (xusa), Odia ଶୋଚିବା (śociba, to grieve).
