Garmin GPS devices are electronic navigational systems developed by Garmin, Ltd. (formerly known as ProNav). The company focuses on automotive, marine, aviation, outdoor, and wearable GPS (Global Positioning System) devices.

In 1989, Garmin was founded by Gary Burrell and Min Kao in Lenexa, Kansas. The name “Garmin” is derived from the first names of its two founders. The company is headquartered in Olathe, Kansas.

Garmin released their first in-car GPS device, the StreetPilot, in 1998. The StreetPilot series was discontinued in 2007. Other Garmin in-car GPS product lines include the Garmin Quest, Garmin nüvi, and Garmin Drive. Accessories for Garmin in-car GPS devices include wireless backup cameras and dash cams. The Garmin dezl line is was released for semi-trucks and trailers. In 2006, the company launched the Garmin zūmo series, a GPS line for motorcycles.

Garmin introduced a recreational handheld GPS series, the Garmin eTrex, in 2000. These lightweight, portable devices are geared towards hiking and outdoor activities.

Mapping on Garmin GPS devices is offered by Navteq. Users can report map errors through Navteq Map Reporter. Most Garmin GPS devices have the ability to display the user’s current location on a vector-based map. Garmin GPS devices are equipped with a basemap, which shows country borders and popular cities. Users can download additional maps, including detailed road maps, nautical maps, and topographical maps.

Garmin operates in the United States, United Kingdom, Taiwan, Belgium (as Formar), Canada (as Garmin AMB), Norway (as Belanor), Spain (as Trepat), and Romania (as Garmin-Cluj).
