Background Information

Garmin first released the inReach Mini on April 30, 2018. This device is a compact, lightweight, satellite communicator intended for the use of hikers. Its primary function is to provide two-way communication between the user and their contacts. This device also tracks the user’s location so that their friends and family can see where they are on their journey. Users can also send an SOS message with their device that will contain their last tracked location.

The inReach Mini utilizes the Iridium Satellite Network, meaning that it can perform all of these functions anywhere in the world and without needing to access a traditional cellular network. The device works best when used in conjunction with the Earthmate application, which is available on smartphones and provides a brighter, more user-friendly screen to access the different device functions more efficiently.

The inReach Mini typically sells for around $350. However, users must also purchase a service plan, which can range from $12 to $100 per month. In comparison with similar products such as the Garmin SE+, the inReach Mini is significantly smaller and lighter. When used with other bluetooth devices and the Earthmate app, the inReach Mini holds the same capabilities of these other, larger devices, all while costing around $50 to $100 less.
