Etymology

From Proto-Hmong-Mien *tshji̯əŋ (new), borrowed from Middle Chinese (MC tshjeng, “clear, quiet”). Cognate with Proto-Hmong-Mien *ntshji̯əŋ (clear), whence ntshiab (clear).[1]
