Etymology

From Proto-Hmong-Mien *ntshji̯əŋ (clear, fresh), borrowed from Middle Chinese (MC tshjeng, “clear, quiet”) with a nasal prefix. Cognate with Proto-Hmong-Mien *tshji̯əŋ (new), whence tshiab (new), as well as possibly Old Chinese (OC *zleŋ, “clear and fine weather”).[1]
