Etymology
Borrowed from early modern German or late Middle High German treffen, from Old High German treffan, from Proto-Germanic *drepaną. Compare Dutch treffen, which was borrowed in the 15th century. The native Luxemburgish form would be *driefen (or *dreffen); the verb is not inherited anywhere in Central Franconian. Further cognates include English drib, Icelandic drepa, Swedish dräpa.
