Etymology 1
From Middle Low German tippen (“to touch lightly”), from Middle Low German tip (“tip, fingertip”), cognate with English tip, from Proto-Germanic *tuppijô, *tuppijǭ (“tip”), diminutive of *tuppaz (“top”).
Merged with Central and Low German tippen, dippen, düppen (“to dip, to dab, to tap”), from Proto-Germanic *dupjaną, cognate with tupfen and English dip. The sense “to type” is influenced by English type.
