Czech

Etymology

Inherited from Old Czech rád, from Proto-Slavic *radъ.

Pronunciation

  • IPA(key): [ˈraːt]
  • (file)

Adjective

rád (comparative raději, radši, superlative nejraději, nejradši)

  1. glad
To jsem rád, že jsi přišel.I'm glad you came.

Usage notes

  • This adjective can only be used predicatively, not attributively. Like glad, it expresses a propositional attitude.
  • This word actually agrees with the subject, but in meaning, it essentially describes the verb. It is often mistaken to be an adverb.
  • It is used with a verb describing an activity to show that the subject likes, liked, will or would like to execute that activity.
Rád zpíval. He liked singing (literally, He, glad, sang. )
Raději se předvádí.She likes better to show off.
Ráda nám pomůže.She'll be glad to help us.
Co bych udělal nejraději?What would I like to do best?
  • Its common use with the preposition za is usually considered stylistically inappropriate and colloquial. The use of a subordinate clause or the dative case is recommended although the dative case can sound dated.
Jsem tomu rád. / Jsem rád, že se to stalo.I'm glad about that. / I'm glad it happened.
Jsem za to rád. (colloquial)I'm glad about that.

Declension

The nominative forms given are short forms.
