From Ripuarian Central Franconian pengelig, pingelig and Low Franconian, in Ripuarian derived from Peng, Ping (“pain”), originally in the sense of German wehleidig (“over-sensitive, whiny”). Formally a doublet of standard peinlich (“hurtful; embarrassing”).
