Etymology

parat + -a

Pronunciation

  • Hyphenation: pa‧ra‧ta

Adjective

parata

  1. exclamatory form of parat

Finnish

Etymology

From Proto-Finnic *parat'ak, equivalent to para + -(e)ta; the root is identical to that of paras. Compare Karelian pareta.

Pronunciation

  • IPA(key): /ˈpɑrɑtɑˣ/, [ˈpɑ̝rɑ̝t̪ɑ̝(ʔ)]
  • Rhymes: -ɑrɑtɑ
  • Syllabification(key): pa‧ra‧ta

Verb

parata (many forms rare; see usage notes)

  1. (intransitive) to improve
  2. (intransitive) to heal, recover, recuperate
Mutta hän on haavoitettu meidän rikkomustemme tähden, runneltu meidän pahain tekojemme tähden. Rangaistus oli hänen päällänsä, että meillä rauha olisi, ja hänen haavainsa kautta me olemme paratut. (Jes 53:5)
But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed. (Isaiah 53:5)
  3. (intransitive, medicine) to heal, mend, get well/better, recover, recuperate
  4. (auxiliary + first infinitive, chiefly in the negative) to be better (not) to do
    Sitä ei parane tehdä.
It is better not to do that.

Usage notes

  • In modern usage, parata is used practically only in the indicative present and imperfect (paranee, parani), in the conditional present (paranisi), in the second-person singular imperative (parane), in the III, IV and V infinitive and, in formal contexts, sometimes in the potential present (parannee) the indicative, conditional and potential perfect forms (on/oli/olisi/lienee parannut) and the infinitive are extremely infrequently used and instead replaced by the corresponding tenses of parantua (on/oli/olisi/lienee parantunut) and the infinitive parantua.
  • Especially strange is that the singular imperative is formed using parata, but the plural is formed from parantua. So different verbs are used, for example, when one says get well soon to one person or a family: parane pian, parantukaa pian.
