Usage notes
Usually intransitive except for (sense 3) and for certain activities (like "cirkus," kurragömma (“hide and seek”), tafatt (“tag”)), and blindbock (“blind man's buff”)). For playing more rule-bound or grown-up games, spela is used. Saying "leka fotboll" makes it sound like soccer is a kind of (free-form) play, or like you are only pretending to play soccer, as a form of play. See also lek.
