langas
Lithuanian
Etymology
Cognate with Latvian logs, Old Prussian lanxto; further origin outside of Baltic unclear. Buck and Fraenkel suggest a derivation from lingúoti (“to rock”), referring originally to swinging windows (that is, windows whose panes swing in and out to open)[1][2] while Smoczynski suggests a derivation from lañkas (“bow”), owing to the semicircular shape of a bow resembling that of many windows.[3]
